Adopting a Pet

If you would like to adopt a dog or cat, begin by completing the Pre-Adoption Application. Learn more about our upcoming Dawgs & Dogs Adoption Event on our Adoption Events page.

Profiles of available pets can be viewed below or on Petfinder.com. 

We encourage interested adopters to visit pets at the shelter. Appointments are encouraged so that we may be better prepared to facilitate this visit. Bring your family and current pets with you for a meet and greet! We have two (2) areas set up like living rooms in which you can spend time with the animals you are considering adopting. You can also take them for walks or let them loose in the play yard to see how they interact with you. Once you have found the right match, we will review your paperwork. If approved, you will receive copies of your new pet's medical records, a free 4 lb. bag of dry food, a free leash and either collar or harness (for dogs, while supplies last). 

Adoption fees for in-county residents are $55 for a dog or puppy and $45 for a cat or kitten. Adoption fees for individuals outside of Orange County are $60 for a dog or puppy and $50 for a cat or kitten. Please note that if you rent your home, we require a copy of your lease agreement or a letter from your landlord outlining any restrictions on the number, size, or breed of pets you are permitted to have. 

Animals will only be adopted to persons 18 years of age or older.

Pre-Adoption Information

We'd like to help you find the right pet and understand its needs, so please fill out the Pre-Adoption Application. A staff member will discuss it with you when you've finished. While we carefully monitor all of our animals, we have limited knowledge of their backgrounds. Therefore, we cannot guarantee the health, behavior, temperament, age, or breed of any animal adopted from OCAS. Please understand that you will assume full financial responsibility for the animal, including any health care or training, Applications are often approved pending current pet vaccinations, fence repairs, and landlord deposits. In fairness to the animal, the selected pet may be held overnight to allow for time to take care of these items, but an individual animal will not be held for any longer than 24 hours after the animal has been spayed or neutered.
