Why does the name of the former owner appear on my tax bill?: The Code of Virginia requires all real estate assessments be assessed in the name of the owner as of January 1st each tax year. When property is sold during the year the mailing address is changed to be sent in care of the new owner. The new owners name will appear on the top line of the bill as of January 1st the following year.

1. What is the real estate tax rate?: All tax rates are set annually by the Board of Supervisors. Current rates can be examined in the Tax and Fee Schedule.

2. Where can I find out how much I paid in real estate taxes on my property?: Contact the Orange County Treasurer’s Office at (540) 672-2656. The Treasurer handles all tax payments.

3. Where can I find out how my property is assessed?: The Commissioner of the Revenue handles the valuation of all real property in the County. This information can be found on the Orange County Website.

4. Where can I get a copy of a survey of my property?: Surveys and individual plats are recorded with the deeds in the Orange County Circuit Court Clerk’s Office. Contact the Clerk's Office at (540) 672-4030.

5. Where are the maps of all the parcels in Orange County?: The maps are located at the Commissioner of the Revenue’s Office in the Gordon Building, located at 112 W. Main Street. The maps are also online at

6. How do I find out who is the current owner of a piece of property?: If you have the street address or map number, the Commissioner of the Revenue’s Office can provide the ownership information. Call (540) 672-4441. This information is also available on the Orange County website.

7. My spouse recently passed away. How do I remove his/her name from the bill?: You should file a will or an affidavit of Intestacy with the Orange County Clerk of the Circuit Court.

9. Why do I have an improvement value on my tax bill and I have not made any improvements to my property?: The improvement value reflects the value of your dwelling or any other buildings or other improvements located on your property, or both. This is a breakdown of the land and building values.

10. Does Orange County bill for supplemental value do to new building(s) constructed being complete or substantially complete during the year?: According to Virginia Code 58.1-3292 and an Ordinance adopted by the Board of Supervisors in 2009, Orange County does bill for new buildings that are complete or substantially complete. The bills are due February 5th, of the following year.

11. Does Orange County offer a Veteran Exemption for Real Estate Taxes for Veterans?: Effective January 1, 2011, there is a Veterans Exemption for real estate taxes for Veterans with 100% service-connected disability, permanent and total.
