Home Security Surveys are a free service to assess your house and surrounding property and identify ways to make your home safer and more secure against crime.
The Triad Coordinator, certified by the National Institute of Crime Prevention (NICP), visits with you at your home to conduct the survey using the principles of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED). CPTED is based on the idea that the “proper design and effective use of the built environment can lead to a reduction in the fear and incidence of crime, and to an improvement in quality of life.” This information sourced from the Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design website.
Some practical applications of CPTED for a single family home might include:
- Fully illuminate all doorways that open to the outside.
- Keep trees and shrubs trimmed back from windows, doors and walkways.
- Use walkways and landscaping to direct visitors to the proper entrance.
- Make the street address clearly visible from the street.
